San Diego, CA – In the spirit of giving, volunteers from MassMutual Pacific Coast will host a food drive for Mama’s Kitchen, a local community based charity that provides food to those with limited resources and limiting diseases such as HIV and cancer. The drive will be held from May 1 to May 31 at MassMutual Pacific Coast’s headquarters in La Jolla in conjunction with twenty-four local businesses. Other community supporters include City National Bank, San Diego Seals, Burns & McDonnell, Aira, Duffy Kruspodin, LLC, Pattern Energy Group, Host Healthcare, AMD, MedAccess, Burns & McDonnell Engineering, Kforce, Novelty Media, Aira Tech, Premier Business Center, Tonix Pharma, Lockton, WestPac, Berkadia, Redwitz, Jet Wealth Advisors, Stepstone, Westcoast Funding and Lindsay & Brownell.
In addition to this project, MassMutual Pacific Coast is collecting donations with a virtual food drive page online and have set their goal to collect $2,000.
“Many who are facing a financial hardship and who are also living with a chronic disease such as HIV or cancer are faced with the horrible reality of choosing between putting food on their table or taking care of their health,” said Andrew Latham Staples, MassMutual Pacific Coast financial services professional. “Due to a tragedy that occurred in my life years ago I too faced that same reality, having been diagnosed with HIV and also facing a cancer scare, while then having no healthcare and limited financial resources to address either. It is because of what I went through that I shifted my career focus and I am blessed to now be able to help provide financial security for the individuals I work with. And when presented with the opportunity to partner with Mama’s Kitchen I jumped at it as it’s truly an honor to help provide nutritious food so that their constituents may have a better quality of life.”
MassMutual Pacific Coast will volunteer at Mama’s Kitchen on two dates, May 31 and June 7, by preparing and bagging food for their delivery service. Some of the MassMutual Pacific Coast staff will also assist in the delivery. Last year, Mama’s Kitchen delivered almost 320,000 meals across San Diego County. Nearly 89,000 grocery bags were also handed out to those in need through Mama’s Kitchen pantry.
“Thank you to Andrew Latham Staples for spearheading what looks to be one of the largest food drive held for our pantry, and to everyone at MassMutual Pacific Coast for rolling up your sleeves in support of Mama’s Kitchen. In doing so, MassMutual serves as a wonderful example of meaningful and impactful corporate community engagement,” says Alberto Cortes, Executive Director of Mama’s Kitchen. “We also appreciate their volunteering in our kitchen and for assisting with the food delivery. Everyone at Mama’s Kitchen is grateful for MassMutual’s commitment to the critically ill people we serve who are otherwise vulnerable to hunger."
